Agreed.

IMO in most cases the basic SEO is already not enough for any directory these days.
I respect your view, but I have a bit different opinion on this, in case we are speaking about general directories (which I believe we do, as these are popping up like mushrooms after the rain, niche directories are a market that behaves differently than niche directories).

Your point of view presupposes that directories battle for rankings, but that's not true. That market, at least 95% of it, is about selling pagerank and backlink anchor power. What I mean with that, is that 95% of the general directory owners really don't care about any traffic from real visitors.
Those that claim that do, are either naive, hypocrites, or one of the few admirable exceptions that have my deep respect.

Though, I strongly disagree that directories disappear quickly because they don't even use basic SEO. General directories disappear mostly because the people will find out that either they will let free submissions in, and it becomes unbearable to manage with the number they will start getting. Next they close free submissions, but this time they don't even get the small percentage of the paid submissions they used getting while directory was open to free ones. That's because they drop from free directory lists and get no traffic at all. As usually they don't have the marketing knowledge and persistence needed to market such directory, nor the time needed to manage directory open for free submissions, they quit.

General directories are an easy to enter field with stable but small returns for most, and as soon as they realize the hard work, they quit.

You hurt my feelings.

SKG. I really do not want to fall out with you on a forum, but talking down to someone is one SUREFIRE way to get their back up. If you cared to read what I said you might have understood what I was saying.

There is a lot of SEO stuff you can do for directory Such as? Give me a list of stuff that can be done that is not covered one way or another in my original statement. Keep in mind that we are talking about a directory here so ROI in time is going to be crucial.

Actually it is not really matter directory or not. Anything you can apply to regular site you may apply to directory. What the difference? In theory yes, BUT Of COURSE there is a difference between a directory and a normal site. On a normal site you have 100% control over everythig. On a directory much of what goes on is controlled by what the script allows you to do. The person who asked the question is clearly not someone who can roll their sleeves up and rewrite the script to be more SE friendly are they?

I can’t believe that you as a SEO professional can say that SEO is only keywords in title, some text content and anchor links. THIS is the statement that has annoyed me a lot. First of all you try to question my ability with the 'I can't believe' comment, then you put words in my mouth, I did NOT say that was was all that SEO is, I said there is not a lot else that he/she can do with a directory script without rolling up the sleeves etc.

I have to say that for some reason now on this and another thread you appear to be talking down to me or trying to be smart with snide little comments like 'I can't believe you said' and You have hurt my feelings etc.

I am not some clown who just got off the boat, I have worked as an SEO to the largest insurance group in Europe (Norwich Union Aviva PLC), and one of the largest digital imaging companies in the World (who I am not allowed to name because of an NDA).

Finally, it was not ME who offfered their paid services to the guy when he asked for help! Might I suggest that if you wish to continue this discussion you contact me via PM where I will be more than happy to discuss anything you wish in whatever manner you wish.

Regards OWG

First of all let me apologize. Yes, honestly it was my intention.

It is your post on supplemental thread that pised me off, when you said “Simon you have a pm.” And then your answer was “The main reasons are something different entirely.” I really can’t stand when people answer like this especially with the knowledge you have. I know that you don’t have to give the exact answer, but IMO better nothing than what you did. Well, it was my feelings, so my apology for this.

How about:
1. choosing the right keywords (IMO most important step)
2. <h> tags
3. Bolded, underline and italic text
4. <alt> tags for images
5. <title> tags for links
6. keywords density
7. conversion factor
8. and so on…
For complete list please purchase my “Do It Yourself SEO” plan. (Just kidding).
I don’t think it needs to roll up the sleeves for this. From other side (again IMO) if you really want to achieve something with directory you have to roll up the sleeves?

If I understood correctly he/she asked for service and prices not for help. I believe it is logical to offer myself if I do this. Isn't it?

OWG, once again I am sorry for my behaviour and I will try my best not to do it again.

Can anyone advise if they are familiar with SEOElite? I'm looking at this and Internet Business Promoter 9 from Axandra; but they want to charge me $358.00 for the standard edition and then add $63.00 VAT, a total of $421.00.

According to them the product is actually priced at 249.95 EUROS not $US!!!

So I am looking for a possible alternative and SEOElite is priced at $167.00.

I'd like to thank the person who followed my Axandra IPB9 recommendation and gave me the credit for it. Whoever you are, again, thanks a lot and best of luck to you. Also thank eSyndicat for allowing members to help each other out.
