On the main index and subsequent pages, it says categories for each page. How do I get rid of that?

You should look for "category" in Admin Panel ->Language Manager and replace or change it.

Oh, Sorry about it. I forgot that the 1.7 does not have Language Manager.
You should go to phpMyAdmin (in your hosting cPanel) run following mySQL query Code:
SELECT * FROM `PREFIX_language` WHERE `value` LIKE '%category%' OR `value` LIKE '%categories%'

Greetings,
Misinformation here... Actually 1.7 version does have Language Manager So you can translate all the values in admin panel.
