Question Temporary domain name for setting up & testing

Hi. I have many domain names and an unlimited domain name hosting account with HostGator. I would like to install Pro on the .net version of one of my domain names for setting up, testing, modifying, etc.; then move it all over to the .com version of the name when it's far enough along to be open to the public.

- Is anything else necessary other than informing you of the change, then changing the appropriate settings in some of the files to point to and work with the .com instead of the .net version?

- I don't expect to get any customers with the .net set-up version, but if I do, so much the better for a good start. Will doing it this way also move all customers, keep their settings, etc.?

Thanks,

Hi,

No problem with test domains. I can change your domain later once you make sure the software if configured properly.

You will need to make changes in your config.inc.php file and change .net domain to .com one. Yes, you will simply reconfigure your script to a new domain and you will still have their data, etc.

Hi Simon,

I'm very close to being ready to change the domain name from the test domain name to the rea one. Exactly what do I need to do?

The new domain name is already set up as another Addon domain name in my HostGator account. Do I simply Move all the files to the new domain name folder, or do I need to have HostGator do it, or can I have them just change the name of the Addon domain name folder/directory or something like that?

Then I need to change settings in the confirg.inc.php file, and whatever other files you tell me that I need to change, etc. How do all the settings for Category URLs, etc. get changed? Is this all done automatically somehow?

Please explain the full process so that I can start preparing now. I may even be ready to do it tomorrow.

Thanks,

Steve

Steve,
Just contact me in helpdesk (sgooffin at esyndicat dot com) and let me know your both domains: test and real one. Yes, you can simply move your domain files to the new folder on your server and then just configure config.inc.php file to reflect changed location.

Your category URLs are generated on the fly according to the domain you have.

1. Simply move your old files to new location for the domain, make sure 'tmp' and 'uploads' directories have writable privileges
2. Modify your config.inc.php
3. Delete all the files from 'tmp' directory

That's all
