Greetings all,
PageRank update is a known issue (it seems eSyndiCat is not the only script that has this issue). The issue comes from the fact that on some servers PHP doesn't correctly calculate checksum necessary to fetch PR value. This problem has been discussed on Google Community (http://www.googlecommunity.com/about5786-0-asc-15.html
).
The alternative way is to use PERL module to fetch PageRank value.
I've implemented an alternative cron job that fetches PR value via PERL module. I haven't prepared documentation yet, but if you are interested drop me a line and I will assist you in installing this module.
P.S.
This module is in beta so I need your feedback on any bugs/problems.

I found out a way to check if this or that Perl module is installed on the server.
On CPanel home page at the bottom left-hand corner you will see an item similar to the one on the attached picture that reads "Installed Perl Modules", next to it the link "Click to View". Just click to see the list of Perl modules installed.
Look for "WWW::Google::PageRank" on the newly opened page. And if the search fails then the module is missing.
In this case you have to contact your hosting company to install the one.

I have followed all the steps to this point.....
Log into Admin Panel and go to Configuration >> Cronjob Configuration.
For this purpose set:
. Get Link Status (checking for broken links) = enabled <----- got it
. Cron Logging = enabled <----not there
. Number of links to check in one run = 10 (this is a test) <------not there
Save changes and leave the Admin Panel.
You now have to run the file from your browser. Enter url of broken.php in the address bar of your
browser. E.g.
http://www.yoursite.com/dir/cron/broken.php
Get this error......
Fatal error: Call to undefined function: getkeyvalue() in /home/igamerli/public_html/cron/broken.php on line 21

Missing admin settings mean that you DID NOT execute mysql queries correctly.
The fatal PHP error means you didn't add function getKeyValue() to classes/DirDb.php.

While we are discussing pagerank ... I am very interested in the pagerank of the reciprocal-url i.e. of the page that links back to my site. This would only be visible in the Admin area.
It seems to me that the work to get the homepage pagerank to work is similar to getting the reciprocal-pagerank (new field in links table, new routine in ph.php/ph.cgi)
Could I persuade you that this is a worthwhile addition to the program (& the future program versions)
I wonder if other users/administrators would be interested in knowing the pagerank of the web page that links-in to their site?

Mark, I checked your log file. It seems that it did not work at first. But then you put pr.cgi into proper folder (namely, /cgi-bin/) and it seems to work now with some minor exceptions.
1. First of all, there is ONE url in your database, that has an extra space before http:// part. This causes troubles. It can be easily fixed by trimming all the extra whitespace before and after.
2. For some URLs the cron reported PR is not available. I checked a couple of such links -- all of them are redirects. That's why PR is not available.

I know that for broken/reciprocal crons you did a bit of code to check for such erroneous spaces, do you think it worthwhile to do the same for pr.php?
I guess it is a trade off between making the code more complex, against the probable support forum requests from people like me who somehow have these extra 'space' characters - (in my case due to importing the url's from my old links program which allowed them)
[2] I tried running pr.php again without success until I thought to run a variant on the SQL you gave me ... UPDATE `dir_links` SET `last_pr_update_date` = NULL
why does setting Cron check interval (in days)=0 not have the same effect?
i.e. forcing the cron job to start again from the beginning of the links.
[3] From my review it seems that the vast majority of PR=N/A
are due to the fact that the link to the partner is also 'broken'.
You have noted that some are because the destination url is a 'redirect.
Once we have established the actual PR we need to consider the follow-on actions. Please could we have a report in the Admin-panel .. a "Pagerank Results" report:
e.g.
Administrator sort options:
by ID number
by Category
By result of PR test
For each link:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Title = lnk partner site

PR test result: Pr = GREY,0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9.... Not Available

I am now getting pageranks nicely in my directory, thanks.
However I do have the config option PERL module for PR update = Disabled.
Also the old pr-cron job did not calculate the PR so I assume(???) the new one still doesn't as it is a server problem (?)
So if my host server can't use pr.php and uses sub-routine to pr.cgi to get the google PR, then how does this happen when the config option PERL module for PR update = Disabled. ?
Now - It is working for me so I am not worried :) but I think it seems odd and might indicate a problem from your programming point of view.
[6] Reciprocal Link PR
In an earlier post I requested info about the PR of the page that linked-in to my site. If this could be done within the pr.php then both PR checks could be done at the same time/date & it would not be necessary to have an extra field in the links table to record the last_recip-PR_update_date as I proviously suggested.

Yes, as I understand:
If the Cron check interval (in days) =1 days
* this means "start checking from the beginning of links each day"
* check this number of links "Number of links to check in one run"
* After hours = (setting from cpanel cron setup)
* check this number of links "Number of links to check in one run"
* untill all links are checked
* then as the Cron check interval (in days) =1 days wait till midnight & start again
So if I set
Cron check interval (in days) =0 days
why does it not force the start of checking "RIGHT NOW"?
I assume that the field last_???link_check_date is used to determine if the 'interval' has passed,
so I wonder if it is something to do with the type of comparison test?
e.g >= instead of>
or <= instead of <
or whatever.
Vincent, I think this is is a little odd (that interval = 0 does NOT mean start NOW) but I don't think this is a high priority issue.

Is it the pr.php script that doesn't distinguish, or the eSyndiCat program/script?
Is it possible for the pr.php script to make the distinction?
As I understand it:
PR=0 means that Google has visited the site & thinks it is rubbish
PR=Grey means that [1] google has not yet visited the site to assess it or [2] Google dislikes the site so much that it has a negative effect on the rank of sites linking to it.
So what does N/A mean? - does it always mean that pr.php did not get a reply from the url?
The reason why I think this is important is that I think administrators would want to treat the different results in different ways.
e.g.
N/a - if N/A is because link is broken then I would probably want to ban/suspend the link from displaying in the links directory - because Google disliked links that don't work (& so do visitors)
Pr= Grey - I would DEFINATELY want to ban/suspend the link from displaying in the links directory - because I can't afford to upset google's assessment of my site.
pr = 0 - not particularly worried: display link if I personally like the site for my visitors.

Yes, what you are talking about makes sense to me.
The issue is that it's not cron problem; rather it's script problem -- eSyndiCat DOES NOT differentiate between PR values of N/A and 0.
If for some reason PageRank cannot be fetched it stores "0" for `pagerank` field. But, when displaying this values it treats 0 as "not available".
The new cron package will replace the old one in the new version. I will talk to Simon to fix this minor PageRank issue as well.

I have just had a look at the links table/pagerank field and it seems to be set to type= tinyint(3). I just wonder if this type does not allow text such as "NA" or "Grey",
I also wonder what effect it would have if we could enter text ... eg when the visitor sorts by clicks how would it evaluate the text values.
Then I wonder if pr.php could apply dummy numbers to substitute for text:
e.g
N/A = -1
Grey = -2
or
N/A = 98
Grey = 99

I see three possible results of PR check:
1. PR update cron WAS NOT able to fetch the PageRank: either the link is broken, or the page redirects to another page.
2. PR update cron fetched the value, but the value is N/A (or "Grey" as you call it). In other words Google hasn't yet assigned PR value to the page, or disliked it so much that will never assign a valid (0-10) PR value to it.
3. PR update cron fetched the value, and the value is within valid rang, namely, from 0 to 10.
I think that INT with negative is good type for this field. In this case it can store the following values:
-2 (the 1st scenario)
-1 (the 2nd scenario)
0
1
...
10 (the third scenario)
This is convenient since you can sort by this field and display invalid PR values at the top... or at the bottom.

Normally I come up with a question or an idea. You say if it is a good idea or not, then you do all the work. I come along and test it.

If changing the field type to INT would work
then do you think that the current type of TINYINT might work already?
IOW is is worth trying to get cron to write -1 and -2 to the field & see what happens?

The above is where you can download the latest release. If anyone needs assistance installing the perl module let me know and I can help you out. If you do not have root access (if you do not own the server your site is on) you can actually still use the perl module by uploading the lib files to your hosting account via FTP and configuring them correctly.
I myself have the perl module running. However, it has not resolved the issue.

other than the folder name, what other mistakes did you find on my implementation of corn package.

In an earlier post I requested info about the PR of the page that linked-in to my site. If this could be done within the pr.php then both PR checks could be done at the same time/date & it would not be necessary to have an extra field in the links table to record the last_recip-PR_update_date as I proviously suggested.
Yes, this too is pretty easy to implement.

I have been having people ask me about link exchanges etc recently & it occurrs to me that there is quite a lot of information about the reciprocal-url page which would be interesting/useful.
I wonder if the reciprocal-check cron job is the right way to collect it?
Things about the reciprocal url that it would be helpful to know:
* What is the google PR of the reciprocal-url page
* How many external links does it have
* What is the Anchor text used in the link to my-site
* what is the description text used in the link to my-site
* Is the link partner valuable? eg:
1. No JavaScript links
2. No links from ‘framed’ pages
3. No ‘flash’ embedded links
4. No robots.txt excluded link pages
5. No Robots Tag excluded link pages
6. Link to my-site should not be through a “redirect” script
Any thoughts?

How to check for the perl module?
Could someone help me get the page rank working on my directory site. Haven't got a clue how to check the perl module? I read the thread but still clueless :0(

In the email please put complete information about your server:
1. CPanel credentials
2. FTP credentials
3. Dir admin credentials
We have never tested it on aruba linux, but I think it should work there as well.

my hosting no have cpanel or plesk, there are a control panel but with few options for email, for third level e for switch linux/windows.
