I have used a meta tag generator but I do not know where or what file to insert the meta tag in!
I tried the index.php but that just doesn't work.
If someone could point me in the right direction I would appreciate it.
Thanks

What exactly do you want to do....
The particular file you are looking for is in the templates folder, its the header.tpl but it will show the same meta information on every page if you alter it.
If you want to change keywords and description for root (index page) and categories etc... select browse categories (left menu admin area) and select edit box which appears over category listings, you should then be able to enter keywords and descriptions for individual categories and root.

Description meta tag is gaining importance on search engines especially Google :good:
Make sure you do not repeat any of your meta tags ( keywords, title, description), anywhere on the site. :ooi:

What do mean mean? I run wedding planning site. So I can only say wedding once anywhere on my site for meta tags. So I couldn't do wedding photographers, it would have to just be photographer? What if I have more than one spot for wedding photography? One is for wedding photography chat and say one is a listing of wedding photographers?

Hi
Just to confirm, will this method of editing the meta-description and meta-keywords tags only affect index.php, or will it affect all the other category pages meta-tags.
Thanks.

For each category you create in the pro version you can enter specific keyword and description tags.
You can enter this information when you set up the category or change it by following the directives above.

that will only affect your root (index page). to have different meta tags on each category you need to follow the same steps for the categories u want to add metas to.

The meta tags for your index.php page are set by editing the ROOT category

Your meta tags are meant to describe the content on a page by page basis. So your wedding photographer page would say
" Wedding Photography suppliers covering the Uk, including ..yada yada yada"
Your Chat area would say
"Wedding Photography chat area - Discuss all aspects of wedding photgraphy amateur and professional, hints and tips and wedding photographic supplies"
these are just examples.

Thanks for the posts. Very beautifully described concepts of SEO.
yes meta tag is important in case but don't stuff keywords in meta tag.Just put meta about your post and specific keywords
