Couldn't find upgrade manual

Pardon me, I know this has been asked many times but I've seek high and low at the forum but I coulnd't find any upgrade manual to upgrade from 2.1.XX to 2.2. The closest thread was http://www.esyndicat.com/forum/about12494.html but the instructions was not elaborate enough for a newie. Could someone kind enough to point me the correct place.

At the same time, may I ask instead of creating a new directory for upgrade, can I do my upgrade in my httpsdocs folder as I realized I don't have permission to create new folder at root directory.
