When adding a Forum to my site

I cannot access it in the normal way ie:

www.mysite.com/forum/ = I get 404 error message

but www.mysite.com/forum/index.php = it works

why? - anyone please?

Infact I was the originator of the thread and the fix is for something else but not for my problem.
