Hi

In my admin panel when i click on browse categories some strange email type header text is appearing. Why is this happening and is there a fix?

Can you post a sample bdeeney ? It helps to see these kinds of issues for a fix...

Hi bdeeney and Bryan Ex,

For what it's worth, I get a lot of spam messages (about pork and bacon) like that with email type headers added as comments in eSyndiCat Pro and version 1.2 installations. They come in batches, sometimes 30 but once 300, that I delete from the Admin Panel manually. They are not related to a particular link, as that part is blank, so they are easy to spot.

Best regards,
Bangkok Bob

There are several automated scripts for spammers these days that not only post to message boards but also sign up for new accounts... and even get past the captcha codes.

bdeeney... based on your screen shot I'm guessing that you do not have suggest categories set to moderation and one of these automated scripts has attempted to spam the category page. You can modify the suggest category page to use captcha but that only stops a few of the scripts out these days and most will pass through no problem. Best bet is to change config to moderate categories and then just delete the ones already there.

Hello Bryan

I've deleted the rouge entries manually
Is it worthwhile enabling catchpa - (I'll be reviewing all links manually)

At this point I would say yes... but the effectiveness of captcha is quickly diminishing. The automated software for spamming forums, guest books, blogs, and the like is running about $400 US I believe and usually someone spending that kind of money will go after the highest profile locations to post. Captcha will certainly lower how much you need to sort through in your admin panel but the only guaranteed way to block it is by moderation. If you want to see the kind of software we're all up against go to Google and search xrumer and check out the first link (especially the details pages!)

... I just checked that. Make it the second or third link on Google. Seems there's a war raging...lol
