displaying sub category in different page

Hi
I wonder how could I display sub categories on different page ?

All I need to know I could I get sub categories displayed when a main category is clicked

All I want to modify slightly the exisitng template. In the left column i want to show the main category. On clicking on the main category I want to show the sub category where now category is showing

any help will be highly appreciated
