Hi
First of all make sure you do set writable permission to tmp/ directory. It's the very important where Smarty compiles its tpl files.
It must be chmodded to 777.

Hello jobie,
You could set the permission in the your FTP manager. Run following commands:
chmod 777 tmp
chmod 777 backup
chmod 777 includes/config.inc.php
