View Full Version : Where are the directories going?

I read there are thousands of directories coming every day.
And 99% of them are going to die.
And some of them will have slow death as the people creating them don't have time to maintain them.

I see full working directories for sale from $75.00 per piece.
Some of them with PR 3 etc.

Any thoughts where this is going?

A year or two ago, I have seen SEO people compaining that just about everyone has her/his own directory.

Since that time, few popular directory scripts were started, eSyndicat including, that boosted the popularity of directory creation even further.

99% of those directories, especially general ones, are nothing else than what is called "link farm". Though no one will admit it of course.

I will not make a "directories are a dead business" prediction, as that's a nonsense, and there is someone saying that every now and than for years already anyway. Just that big part of the current directory business is just an artificial industry, a bubble that's gonna deflate soon, though no-one will notice for a long time.

As there are people still doing good business on "I will submit your site to thousands of search engines", year or two ahead there will still be people doing business with link farms.

Now....nothing from the above was about REAL directories, of course.

The thing is, the directory business is just WAY TOO EASY to enter nowadays, with great free scripts and cheap hosts, you can get one out in an hour and after $5 per year investment incl. domain and hosting.
