For marketing and user-friendliness, it's nicer to have:
/contact/
But, what about SEO? Is it better to go with:
/contact.html
I'm not sure if it matters to Goog or others

It doesn't matter for search engines.

No matter with somename.html and /somename/ Search engines will index both.

I do also think there is no (great) difference in these both URL types. Each one is pretty good and indexed well by all SEs.

IMHO nowadays it's down to just a personal preference.

Personally I like subpages more :) You can see this yourself analyzing our site. We could make forums, demo, directory using subdomains. Instead we installed them in subdirectories. I can not say there are certain reasons for that. We just like this more :)
