how do I count ONLY main category instead of main and sub-categories

Can you please show me how to count ONLY the main category (how many links) instead of main and sub-categories combination?

As I understand you only want to count immediate children links (i.e. links for which the category is the immediate parent), and not include grand-children, grand-grand-children, etc. links.

My question is: do you want to do it for Top Categories only or for any category?

Hello,
I want to do it on the first index page where lists all categories.
directory/index.php
For example, I have this:
category(10 links)/sub-category(10 links)
I want to list like this on the index page ('cause I do not list the sub-catetory on main page): category (10), instead of category (20)
