Is there any way to import some listings from google or other search engines. There is a 3rd party product at phpld which sifts thru google listings, and imports them into phpld db.

This would be good since people are saying dmoz listings can get you banned....

Is there a product like that, or barring that, can I put it in phpld, and then use some importer (any?) to bring it over from phpld db?

Thanks.

As I see Google uses the same Open Directory Project (read DMOZ) listings in their directory (http://www.google.com/dirhp). Or am I wrong?

Actually talking about the organic search results, when you search for any keyphrase, not google directory (which as you state, would be dmoz-clone). This would actually greatly benefit the site's theme, as you are focusing on sites that natually show up for the targeted keywords.

aaahh, thanks subseo.

I had seen this page, but I figured it is only working with dmoz. On 2nd reading, I guess you can point it to any page (e.g. google search results) and get the links that way. Nice solution.

I have never been a big fan of automatic ways of filling in directories. The same with Google listings.

Link descriptions will look ugly when presented in directory listings. My opinion.

My understanding is it will not pull google results you will have to use a proxy Google.

You got to get some listing in there, to start with. While I agree with automation not being very good, it would be nice to be able to pull in some initial listings, and then quickly edit them to make it unique. That would give you a running start. Abusing it by running just automation is not very good. Agreed.

It now makes sense to me too. It's not that bad idea to have such kind of automation to get some listings to start with.
