Google only shows a sample of the backlinks (that doesn't mean that they don't know that they exist) while yahoo shows all of them. For example yahoo shows about 16500 backlinks for my directory while google only shows about 800. In addition to that yahoo updates the backlinks daily while google updates them every couple of months.
In order to increase your backinks you will have to do some promotion, even simple things like directory submissions, article submissions etc will help.

I'm so glad they are not rolling over and letting G simply own the Internet.
