Has anyone been able to add an address field into eSyndiCat and use it to produce a Google Maps link?

Hello mealex,
Please post exact information about this mod.

Sergey, the mod is pretty simple: user (or admin) enters City, State, Zip info and the script should display a map of that location (GoogleMaps can do it).

The mod itself doesn't seem to be very complex.
The only problem is that Google Maps displays locations in terms of longitude and latitude. Thus, before passing location data to Google Maps one has to conver "human readable" location like city, state, zip into long/lat and only then pass it to Google.
Is there a free service that can make such a conversion?

This site has a PHP class for free which is built on the GoogleMap API
http://www.solmetra.com/en/disp.php/en_products/en_scripts/en_maps
However, it only produces maps by city. I'm working on a local directory and would need more exact mapping for local businesses. I've seen it done on other sites so I know it's possible.
Cheers!

I use Google Maps for forum member map - which is a SMF mod, but I also play around with them. What you need is to geocode the precise position and there are lots of free geocoding site where you can zoom into an address and capture the coordinates.
You'll need to create a page with the Google map and get your own URL code.
Try this for info -
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Google_maps
I've used the info here to do quite a few bits and pieces.
I've used this before for maps as it creates the full code-

thanks for all the information, guys,
2 Vincent:
Could we please make a special plugin in our next version to display Google Map by a given fields? For say admin creates additional fields needed for gmaps (reasons could be different: a directory of local shops, cafes, etc) and it is displayed on listing details page.

I am Yahoo YPN user and would like to get yahoo maps!
www.AdsenseAlternatives.com (http://www.AdsenseAlternatives.com) is one of my sites.
So, when you make a new mod for maps please take into consideration for Yahoo maps as well.

update
On the June 11, 2006 Google has added geocoding facility to their maps:

Now it's even easier to implement this feature.

Is it possible to add google maps with version 2.0, any mod?

I need this mod so I can display skydiving drop zones and ultralight friendly airfields across the world. Would like for it to display in link details page based on admin input, not user or editor input. Mod must be transferable to more than one directory, and if at all possible stay clear of basic functionality so that a patch or upgrade will not be affected or vice versa.
If you can do it, I have $. Please send PM with estimate.
