Hi all!
I just purchased and installed the 1.2 Pro version. My whole site has to be in Greek iso-8859-7. I am interested in the frontend (the one that visitors see), the backend can be in english.
Unfortunately I am having some difficulties:
1. In "Manage Link Fields" I cannot edit the default fields via the admin panel. I press "edit" but their titles are greyd out (inactive), so I cannot modify them. How is it done?
2. I cannot add a custom Link Field in Greek since I am getting "Field name should consist of letters and numbers only. Length 2-20". (In english it works OK)
3. Adding a Category or Link in Greek also don't work correctly since the characters appear as strange symbols and the link doesn't appear at all in the frontend. Although 'link count' next to the category name shows for example (1), when you click to see the link contained in that category nothing appears.
Please advise...
Thanks a lot in advance.

I am mentioning Greek characters above, but I imagine this is the case for any NON-Latin charset.
Any help...?

Hi
I think there could be a solution for you.
1. In "Manage Link Fields" I cannot edit the default fields via the admin panel. I press "edit" but their titles are greyd out (inactive), so I cannot modify them. How is it done?
That's right. You can not edit them as they are mandatory for our software. You can not remove them. But you can make manual changes directly via phpMyAdmin. Let me know what changes you would like to do exactly and I will advise in details what and where to change
2. I cannot add a custom Link Field in Greek since I am getting "Field name should consist of letters and numbers only. Length 2-20". (In english it works OK)
Create a name with Latin name :) Later in language file make correct changes - for say you need to create a downloads field. You may name it 'dwnl' for say and modify value in language file to display it.
3. Adding a Category or Link in Greek also don't work correctly since the characters appear as strange symbols and the link doesn't appear at all in the frontend.
Please email me your site details and I will take a look.

1. Basically I would like to rename them and use Greek names for them.
There is really no need to have them in Greek. These are just FIELD NAMES and are absolutely invisible to end users. They have corresponding entries in language file that get displayed to visitors.

Thanks Vincent!
I also realised that and I was able to fix it the way I wanted.
My remain problems are:
1. I cannot add a Category name in Greek. That is I add without any problem from the backed, but I get strange characters i.e Ξλληνικά
Simon logged into my FTP trying to fix this, but I am afraid it's still NOT fixed. Simon, if you read this could you please inform me on where do we stand.
I added a category in Greek using phpMyAdmin and although it appears OK on the frontend it still appears with strange characters in the backend.
2. My directory is NOT a link directory, thus I would like to have only the tile as REQUIRED field. URL, Description, etc MUST NOT be required. Any ideas how to fix that?
Any help would be greatly apreciated!
Thanks a lot.

The mod_rewrite function is enabled automatically, but i don't see a .htaccess file... what code needs to be in the file so I can add and upload?
Vincent Wright

You have to re-upload the .htaccess file -- you can find it in your eSyndiCat distributive.
I still recommend reading the article above -- it explains why the file is missing on your server.

do you possibly know how to change visibility settings in Dreamweaver 8? I see it now when I drowse the local directory, but can't figure out how to get it on the server... thanks for your link to the article, it was helpful.

I'm glad the article was helpful to you.
As for your question -- unfortunately, I have no experience with DreamWeaver at all.

No problem!
I got the .htaccess files in all the directories but not the main dir... the contents read Deny from all... they are on the server now, but still having the same error... am I missing something?
Vincent Wright

I'm confused. If there is no .htaccess file in the main folder you HAVE TO re-upload it. You can find this file in your distribution .zip file. Otherwise, the script will not work with mod_rewrite enabled.
tuposllc

I found it when unzipping the distribution .zip and uploaded it... my mistake.
I am also confused now, as the site no loger is accessible after uploading... please forgive my ignorance, I didn't make any changes to the file just uploaded it.

So, should I read this as "The problem still exists" or "The problem is resolved now"?

Is there any way for you (for me) to look at Apache web server logs?
Vince, looks like same story with RewriteBase...

I got ftp access. But I'm totally confused now.
It's working now. When I visit this url

I see directory home page. I tried to browse categories and pages like Top and Popular Links -- they all work for me.

to tonino (regarding the original encoding problem)
Greetings,
that's what I had to do to enter categories in Greek. I only tested it on Suggest Category page in Admin Panel. I didn't try to export/import. So you are warned.
1. First of all I installed Greek input on my Windows XP.
2. I logged into my admin panel and adjusted some settings.
a) Configuration >> General Configuration >> Default charset for pages set to "iso-8859-7"
b) At the bottom of the same page `Enable path field for categories` set to "enabled". This is necessary since URLs only allow latin characters. And if you use mod_rewrite to have SEO friendly URLs the script uses titles to generate category paths. Since categories are in Greek you need some mechanism to add latin names. This options does exactly that. Later when you Suggest/Edit categories you will see additional field to enter lating name/path.
Now save changes.
3. Modified admin/suggest-category.php a little. This seems to be the most tricky part. By default (hardcoded default), charset for Suggest Category page is utf-8 which is not appropriate for us.
Well, open admin/suggest-category.php, find this line of code (in my installation it is line #99):
$gUtf = true;
and change it to this
$gUtf = false;
Save changes and close the file.
4. Created a test category.
I created a test category like this one:
Category path: Sports (remember? url part)
Category title: Σπορ
Category status: Active
Category description: Σπορ
Category meta-description: Σπορ
Category meta-keywords: Σπορ
5. Now when I browse my newly created category its name is displayed correctly in titles and breadcrumbs, while url shows "http://esc/Sports/".
Give this a try and communicate the results to me please.
