I need to convert a layered image to all vector layers so that I can blow it up for big advertisements, maybe a truck graphic, maybe even a billboard.

1. Is it possible? (and still have nice smooth edges, sharp features)

2. How to do it? Any recommendations for programming?

It would be sooooooooooo great to get this figured out. Thanks for any help :)

Petal you on the right forum?? Shouldn't you be posting this in a graphics site? :p

But i admire you for asking, you never know you may just get an answer!

Exactly. I'll post this in a graphics forum this week (I hope), but I also know that there are lots of very talented folks right here (where I go every day). So, I thought I'd toss it out there. I have my fingers crossed :)

Yes you can convert it to vector.
According to the GA's in my dept at work it should be possible with Photoshop.

I have never converted raster images to vector so there is little or nothing I can advise here.

Just google for 'raster to vector'. When I searched I found several links to software that does just that.

Hope this helps.

Adobe Illustrator CS2 has a new and advanced feature of converting from raster to vector. Besides there are some tutorials about this at http://www.good-tutorials.com/search/query/vector/1/0/2

I have just contacted our designer and asked for advice.
It depends on what sort of image you are going to vectorize. If we are talking about national emblems, or something similar he uses Corel Draw for this. If it's a building like a Church then he prefers to do this in Adobe Photoshop (I do not even suppose how he can do that).
I'm not sure there is a really convenient tool for vectorizing images :( Most things should be done manually.

Thanks, one and all. I'm going to try out what you have suggested. I don't have PS or Draw, but I'll see if I can get some trial downloads. I found out that Fireworks (adobe) does a great job for web graphics but that it's a bit limited in creating a file that can be seriously expanded (at least that was what i read somewhere).

I dunno....I know that Photoshop is the king, but does it coordinate really well with Dreamweaver (as does Fireworks)? For just doing sites, I'm thinking of getting the Studio 8 system from Adobe. This is Dreamweaver, Fireworks, and some Flash thing. I've been using Namo (www.namo.com), and it's pretty nice. Much less expensive than Studio 8.

I also found this:

I sent them a file, and their rates, etc., seemed reasonable.

What's the best graphics/site-creation combo out there? Is it Studio 8?

Many thanks :)

I'm not sure what you mean by coordinating, but Photoshop does really good job of saving graphics for web. Though, since Adobe has bought out Macromedia (it's so unusual now to see Adobe Flash Player ;)) they will probably make some steps towards integrating these two products. Just an idea.

We use this combo for creating sites: VMware with RedHat + PHP + MySQL + Apache as a full-fledged web server, Vim for editing files, Photoshop for creating graphics, and of course Firefox and IE to test it all.
