Sub cats not showing

This maybe a really silly question, but how do I get the sub-categories to show beneath the top tier cats??

Log into admin panel.

Configuration >> Page Navigation and Listings

Close to the bottom you will see "Number of subcategories". Set to it to some positive number and save changes.
