HI
I have spent a day experimenting with the editors function & searching the forum, but I really dont understand whats going on. I Think the one function is trying to do 2 separate things, but I am not sure Would anyone explain? This is the log of my researches tests and puzzles - but what is it really all about? Thanks Mark Case Study: 1 Editors This is an area I have found confusing. I was expecting something which would provide a way for link partners to edit/modify their link details at any time after the original suggestion had been approved. To ensure that only the correct link partner make such changes they would need to log-in with details sent to them by email when their suggested link was approved. They would also need a “forgot password” facility. 1.1 Editors = category moderators However it seems that the Editors functions are not intended for the above purpose. Some link Directories can be very big indeed with thousands of links. In these circumstances the Administrator might want to delegate some functions to other people who will specialise in monitoring/Editing certain parts of the directory – i.e. certain categories and sub categories. For link directories with only a few hundred links this feature is probably not required WARNING: There seems to be some suggestion that Google does not like DMOZ-Alike sites, so maybe care is needed before choosing this option? Despite experimenting with options in Admin-Panel-Configurations-EditorConfigurations for the DMOZ like functions, and registered only options I can not see where / how the “Editor of categories “ functions are set up. Nor how a new registered editor is allocated certain categories to be responsible for. 1.2 Link Partner – Modifying Own Links However it does appear that the editor’s function can be adapted to act as a link partner modification system. So
1.2.1Registering as an Editor OK, so now I return to the link directory and “register” using the Editors name & Password box. All seems to go well, I receive an email confirming my details. 1.2.2Before Suggesting Editor’s Own link(s) Provided I register as an editor before I submit one or more links, then when I subsequently log-in as that editor I can select the “View my Links” option, and then edit the link details. I even get the option to “upgrade link” to a sponsored plan. Each time an Editor modifies one of their links it gets added to the administrator’s “Waiting Approval” list. In this list there is nothing to indicate that this is a modification approval as opposed to a new suggested link approval. [suggest] I believe that the administrator should have this information (why does this link need approving) displayed in the Waiting Approval list 1.2.3Links not suggested by individual Editor The editor can not edit any links that they did not create as an editor. 1.3 Case Study options For purposes of my case study I do not need/want Category-Editors. I would like link partners to be able to modify their links, but the method is not very link-partner friendly. Decided for Case study (for now) I will disable Editors functions. Thanks for all the information your post here. We will gather it and create a great manual
You understand editors correctly. There are two completely different editors. #1. Editors = can modify their own links only. Besides, they can login and add another link (or severl links of their own). You can configure eSyndiCat to accept links from registered visitors aka Editors only. What are the benefits? You have a database of emails and your editors can later modify their own listings by accessing to their account. #2. DMOZ editors = editors responsible for a branch of categories. They are more similar to forums moderators. They can approve, modify listings submitted by other visitors in categories they are responsible for. Let me know if you need more information. Please ask if you need clarification about any feature.

I will use your comments / info. to update my case study.
Thanks ![]() OPtion 2 is still a mystery ... is that editor-as-moderator function working? If it is where do I tell an editor which categories thay are responsible for? -- I cant see it in Manage Editors, -- nor in Browse/edit categories which are the 2 places I maight expect to see a connection between a particular editor and the categories they manage. reagrds Mark Last edited by Mark Brookes; 07-31-2006 at 05:28 PM. |

It works. But it has some bugs. Administrator can not manage categories editors are responsible for, and that's a real problem. Administrator can not create editors himself as well. So the only way to become a DMOZ editor is to register via front-end.
Well, I think we should get rid of this DMOZ editors functionality at all. I do not think it's really useful.

Or at least I would rename "DMOZ-like editors" to Moderators. |

I think DMOZ like editors is needed in large directories and is a needed function. Very useful to delegate some job to friends and trusted people.
WHERE can i activate this??? i cannot find the option anywhere? I dont care if the people i select like dmos like editor are able to aproove links in the entiry directory. I plan to have 4 or 5 trusted people with this ability only. Also in future versions the admin would be able to select categories where the editor have Dmoz like permissions. I mean, someone can aprovee only in sports and computers, anywhere else is onle a normal editor. Like the moderators of only certain forums... |

Hi ronaquin496,
We removed this functionality (DMOZ like editors) from our version and we will not have it anymore. It creates some overhead and it's not needed by most members.

We are currently working on more effective privileges system for our next version. There will be a status for approving links and categories only.
