Modifying category display (in front end)

Is it possible to (easily) modify the category listings to be in a tree, kind of like http://lmcancersupport.com.au/directory (top left side) where clicking on the + expands that category?

Has this been done in any of the free templates?

Also I am not talking about the Ad Listing screen, but the main directory/homepage/category screens.
