As far as I know, Yellow Pages, provide access to a given link via either or both Category or Location, which seems to fly in the face of "URL canonicalization" if the only determination is for a link to be accessible via more than one path. If that's the case, then that's a bummer.
For example, just prior to purchasing eSyndicat, I was in the process of developing something akin to my perception of Yellow Pages, which does provide access by either or both Category or Location: http://www.newpostings.com/business You can see an example at: United States » California » Los Angeles » Lancaster » 93535 » and / or » Categories » Business » Business Services » E-Commerce » or submit your own. Note: this software will never go live given the availability of eSyndicat, so adding links for traffic is a waste of time. I was unaware of this "URL canonicalization" business until today, but if multiple accesses to any given link are now considered to be a "bad thing", then that truly is a bummer and really takes away from the value of Yellow Pages. Incidentally, as an aside, one of the things I like about eSyndicat is the way it handles multiple levels of categories; a feature rarely found in lesser directory scripts, and one of the primary reasons for purchasing eSyndicat. However, there is one slight modification that could be made that could easily quadruple revenue and that is to use checkboxes rather than radio buttons. Making it "easy" to select multiple categories or locations seems to me to be a real winner. Checkout would then compute the extened price based on the number of URL accesses * the unit price. But then, of course, we have this questions about "URL canonicalization". Then too; "URL canonicalization" connotes the creation of URL's according to some standard; which is a long way from the number of URL's pointing to a given link. Also; what does this do for "crossed categories"? Anyway, that's my two cents.... Phil |

This script will be just a mod for directory script or it will be sold like a new script?
Because I need yellow pages script and I thought using this directory script as yellow pages. So if it's just a mod that I can download freely then I can buy this script now but if it's different script then I better wait and buy that script when it's released. |

Hi,
Is the yellow pages script a standalone product? I am asking, because I bought the esyndicat software BECAUSE I want to make a yellow pages directory - and I honestly can't wait to see the script... This is the only thing holding us back now, in terms of launching our platform. Cheers Avivson |

Greetings,
thanks for your interest in the script it's going to be a whole new script - it's a more a package with a set of plugins & extra functionality & template created specially for yellow pages type sites. It will not be a free mod as well - it will be a paid premium class addon for the esyndicat core. I'm not sure about the price right now. It will be set depending on resources this script might require. We will see

So the yellow pages script will be a plugin and not an entire script? I'm asking because me and my partner are custom developing many features for esyndicat for our clients. At the moment we are preparing to purchase multiple eSyndicat licenses, and I'm wondering how this script will come into play after we have purchased those licenses just for the core eSyndicat without this plugin, if we do choose to provide this plugin to our clients as well.
Thank you. |

Hi Simon ,
When we say yellow pages will come out in Feb, do we have a date when we can celebrate. Loads of us have put off customizing the current script in anticipation of your yellow pages product. Thanks and Regards, Faraz |

I'd give them a little more time on the Yellow Pages script. I've read a few times people asking for previews and more information, but the priority is to get the bugs fixed in 2.3. Then the script can work within 2.3 without any flaws.
What the Yellow pages script will include is pretty easy to guess though. If you look at the print version, or the online versions Yellow Pages then it wll give you a better idea. Better category options with better search options within those categories = Yellow Pages. I'd think the priority should be to get 2.3 fixed without any bugs and then the plugins fixed to take out the bugs there ... then the Yellow Pages add-on when the basics have been sorted. Be a little more patient people as the team have been working around the clock to get things right, and they will do too ... just give them a little more time to get the foundations set in place and then you can build. |

Inferno,
I didn't ask (in the other forum on this topic) because I'm inpatient or trying to push them into getting their YP script done, I'm just curious what they have in mind because I've bought just about every YP type script on the market except e-directory and all have been a big disappointment. Most developers believe the same thing you said "Better category options with better search options within those categories = Yellow Pages" and they more less leave it at that except maybe for allowing featured ads and banner placement (esyndicat does a better job with the banner plugin then anyone). However, there is a lot more to it than that if you want to make serious money with a yellow page script. It's not so much about what visitors like but what advertisers with REAL MONEY want. That's why I was curious what they were working on. I'm real familiar with this end of it because we call potential advertisers all day long and I know something about what goes on at yellowpages.com and how they make money. It may be a subject worth discussing in more detail, if anyone is interested. Last edited by rallen; 01-18-2010 at 05:55 PM. |
