How do I install Free version on my pc/laptop?

Ok, I just downloaded and unzipped free version to my laptop to try it out before I buy the pro version.

I see the install folder but have no idea what to click in it and what steps to follow thereafter.

Can someone provide me:
- step-by-step instructions on what to do?
- what other softwares/settings do I need to have before installing the software?

Well, I downloaded and installed XAMPP and tried to follow all the steps as mentioned in the esyndicat installation thread above.
I can't install it. Lets put it this way: I have no clue what I am doing or what I need to do

I am hoping may be esyndicat can install the free version of the directory software on their server for me to try it out. That will be great.

It is possible to install Esyndicat & all other PHP related scripts under Xampp on your PC. I have done so, including the free version of EsyndiCat.

After installing Xampp, which contains Apache and MySQL servers, you need to start both either via the Xampp Control Panel manually everytime you want to use them OR you can install them as a SERVICE via the same control panel making them start automatically when u start your PC.
Actually during Xampp installation it must have asked you if u want to install them as a service ... .

Having installed & started Xampp ...

You need to know that all PHP files in Xampp are placed in the "htdocs" folder of Xampp. After u extract your Esyndicat file u downloaded, for simplicity, rename it "esyndicat" and place it in htdocs.

You can start the installation process by going to http://localhost/esyndicat

Before that however, you will need to

edit
xampp\apache\conf\httpd.conf
and uncomment
#LoadModule rewrite_module modules/mod_rewrite.so
restart xampp apache

... to correct some Xampp related error.

Go to http://localhost/phpmyadmin ....
which should be familiar if you have used web-based cpanels.
Create a database, eg named esyndicat...
Go to "Privileges" (link on start page of phpmyadmin)

Create a user eg. also called esyndicat ...
Select "localhost" ...
Give your user a password ...
Give that user ALL privileges ...

Note the details above as you will need them for the installation, ie
Database name, username, password, db hostname (which should be "localhost")

After that go to http://localhost/esyndicat ... where you start the installation, following the instructions on that page.
